Marathon Day!! Woot!
Twelve weeks, four runs a week, mileage increasing by two percent a week culminating in a twenty-mile long run, and then decreasing for the last two weeks which, in running lingo, is called tapering. A marathon is 26.2 miles. I don’t know why, in training, they don’t have you run that, because I can tell you, those last six miles are hard! Like stupendously hard! Like I don’t know if there is an adjective to describe how hard.
My calves hurt, my quads hurt, and near the end there, I kind of hunched over, and had a rounded-back running stoop. I came out of the gate running and over the long miles, this deteriorated to a shuffle, to a walk-run-walk strategy to a why-am-I-doing-this-again? internal dialogue. But man, when I could see the finish line, once again, I’m at a loss for words. And I’m supposed to be a writer! It was like hearing a favorite song, one you hadn’t heard for years and maybe forgot how much it could move you until the first few bars played and the drums kicked in and it all came back in a roar. It was like that, only one hundred times more. And I still feel like I’m falling short on what it was like.
I’m happy I finished it. I want to laugh at the John from twelve weeks ago who thought he had a shot of posting a Boston Marathon qualifying time. That John was an idiot. An ambitious idiot, but an idiot nonetheless. Let’s just say, for my age group, I’d need to make up a whole hour to qualify. An hour! Just to qualify for the opportunity to request a spot on race day. Silly John from twelve weeks ago. What was that guy thinking?
Now, back to our show. The MOVIES OF THE DAMNED!! podcast show, that is. This week, we discuss Mom and Dad. A dark comedy starring Nicholas Cage and Selma Blair. Remember when Nicholas Cage did films in which he’d be an entertaining crazy man and not a soft-spoken action star who, in my opinion, couldn’t really pull it off? Well, in Mom and Dad, the crazy man is back and, boy, is he entertaining.
